چکیده

The comparison of actions in the physical world with actions on interactive devices reveals a remarkable difference. In daily life we easily perform several tasks in parallel, e.g. when drinking coffee while reading this text, drinking may be in the background or periphery of the attention. Contrarily, we almost always have to focus our attention on each digital device we interact with. Considering the growing number of devices competing for our attention, novel interaction techniques have to be explored to offer Peripheral Interaction with digital devices. We believe that this approach supports interactive technology to be better embedded in everyday routines. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers and practitioners from different disciplines, to share their experiences with human-computer interaction (HCI) for the everyday routine and to shape a shared understanding of Peripheral Interaction.

Introduction: Framing Peripheral Interaction

In everyday life, we perform several activities in our periphery of attention. For example, we are aware of what the weather is like and we can routinely wash our hands without actively thinking about it. However, we can also easily focus on these activities when desired. Contrarily, interactions with computing devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, usually require focused attention...

Community computing as human - computer interaction

There is too little engagement between community computing and human± computer interaction. In the future there should be more. Embedded human computer interaction.

In this paper, human interaction with embedded or ubiquitous technology is considered. The techniques focus on the use of what might be termed "everyday" objects and actions as a means of controlling (or otherwise interacting with) technology. While this paper is not intended to be an exhaustive review, it does present a view of the immediate future of human-computer interaction (HCI) in which ...
